A major refurbishment is under way in a function space beneath a renowned Bury St Edmunds hotel.

The Angel Hotel has announced the start of a ‘truly stunning makeover’ at The Vaults, which has been used as a restaurant, bar and function space.

In a post on social media yesterday, a spokesperson for the hotel, on Angel Hill, said the refurbishment programme had started and they would unveil more of the new look and atmosphere as the work progresses.

They said: “Be assured that none of the charm of Suffolk's most unique venue will be lost.

“Plans for this year are bigger than ever, with a calendar bursting with new ideas. We will reveal all these plans very soon.”

The spokesperson said that the 12th-century cellars were built from the same stone used to face the town’s abbey.

“Originally, it was an undercroft used to carry out financial transactions that weren't appropriate for sacrosanct ground, with tunnels linking to the abbey,” they added.

In recent years, The Vaults has hosted weddings, birthdays, a New Year's Eve party, steak nights, whole animal tasting menus, Sunday Sessions with live music and Underground Supper Clubs.

Gough Hotels, which owns The Angel, has been approached for comment.
