Suffolk’s firefighters called to flooding incidents overnight near Stowmarket, Lowestoft, Sudbury and in Needham Market





People trapped in a church doorway due to rising flood water and waterlogged properties were among the flood-related incidents firefighters were called to overnight.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service attended a number of call-outs across the county last night and in the early hours following the heavy rain.

At 2.47am, it was called to help individuals who had been driving on the B1113 in Old Newton, near Stowmarket, when their car hit flood water which forced them to seek shelter in the doorway of the nearby St Mary’s Church.

The flood water rose which left them trapped in the doorway.

The fire service was called by the police to help in rescuing them.

The incident was dealt with by 4.24am.

Meanwhile, the fire service received three calls to Lound Road, off The Street, in Blundeston, near Lowestoft.

A number of properties were affected by run-off from fields and firefighters pumped the water away until the levels subsided.

The calls were at about 1.44am and it was dealt with at 2.29am.

Two vehicles were trapped in water on the B1078 in Coddenham at 10.50pm.

An elderly couple was rescued from one of the vehicles by a farmer and a man in his 20s was rescued by the fire service.

Water affected the electrics of a property, in Bildeston Road, Offton, at 10.31pm and a crew isolated the electrics.

Flood water also hit properties in Foxglove Avenue, Needham Market, at 9.33pm and firefighters pumped the water out.

In Further Street, Assington, near Sudbury, flood water seeped off fields and affected the electrics of a property at 8.51pm.

A crew pumped water into a nearby ditch.
