Africa Alive, between Lowestoft and Southwold, names its new critically endangered addax calf

A critically endangered nomadic Sahara Desert antelope born at a Suffolk animal reserve just before Christmas has been named by its keepers.

The female addax calf, who was born on December 19 at Africa Alive in Kessingland, between Lowestoft and Southwold, has been given the name Tayma.

The name, supposedly meaning white desert and oasis, was born as part of a breeding programme which the Whites Lane site has been associated with since 2011.

Addax, whose wild population is now estimated to be between 30 to 90 mature individuals, is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list.
