Cadent gas works in Duke Street, Ipswich, to resume in February – and will last for months

Major gas works along a busy Ipswich street are set to resume in the coming weeks – and will be in place for several months.

After downing tools for the Christmas period, Cadent will resume works at Duke Street from February 1.

The gas firm is working to upgrade ageing pipes underneath the road, a project that began in June last year.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “This is a continuation of work we are doing to upgrade some of our ageing gas pipes that are underneath the roads in the local area.

“These are pipes that transport gas to help heat homes, schools, hospitals, offices and other buildings in the local area and beyond.

“It’s all part of a big investment programme, to modernise the gas network – keeping people warm in their homes now and getting the network ready for lower-carbon gases in the future.”

When work resumes, the bus lane along Duke Street, from the junction with Wykes Bishop Street to Pownall Road, will be suspended until March 15.

A single lane on Wykes Bishop Street will also shut.

In addition, a single lane closure in Duke Street, running from Pownall Road to Fore Street, will be in place from March 4 to May 31.

Only southbound traffic will be able to access the road during this period.

The bus lane will also be closed for this work.

The Cadent spokesman said the project is expected to last until late summer.

The spokesman added: “We started works in the Duke Street area last year and paused, at the request of the highways authority, for the Christmas period.

“Our teams are currently on site finishing some remedial works, in preparation for our return to Duke Street on February 1. We will keep our signage updated as we progress.”
