Great Barton roads The Avenue, Fornham Road and Livermere Road, near Bury St Edmunds, closed overnight from 7pm to 5am for pothole repairs

Village roads are due to be closed again tonight for work to take place to fix potholes.

The Avenue, in Great Barton, near Bury St Edmunds, will be closed from 7pm to 5am for road repairs to take place overnight to limit disruption, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Highways said.

The road closure, which was also in place last night, also includes Fornham Road, from the A143 to Fornham Road Farm, and Livermere Road, from Fornham Road to Cotswold House.

The closure in The Avenue is from Fornham Road to Lodge Cottage.

Cllr Beccy Hopfensperger, a county councillor for the area, has pushed for the repairs to take place.

She said: “It’s something I have been trying to work on since before Christmas when Compiegne Way was closed [due to flooding] and it’s HGVs using that road really inappropriately.

“Signs went up saying ‘not suitable for HGVs’ but unfortunately they were still using that [causing the road surface to break up].”

A resident is understood to have taken the matter into their own hands and carried out temporary repairs in The Avenue on Monday morning.

Compiegne Way is currently closed following heavy downpours and highways contractors are set to visit this week.

Cllr Hopfensperger said: “We cannot have that road closed. It’s not fair for the surrounding communities.

“It’s a major strategic route and the consequences are HGVs use less appropriate routes and then you have what has happened in The Avenue and the verges get completely destroyed really.”
