Plans to convert former King’s Head hotel and the Odd Fellows Hall in Bungay to apartments and houses submitted
A series of renovation works have been proposed to convert the site of a former hotel and hall into apartments and houses.
An application has been submitted to East Suffolk Council for the refurbishment of two grade-II listed buildings in Earsham Street, Bungay, near Beccles.
The plans include converting the former King’s Head Hotel into 11 hotel apartment suites and the neighbouring Odd Fellows Hall into three houses.
If given the green light, the back of the hotel will also have parking spaces.
The plans have been submitted by Paul Thornton, of Drawing Inc Ltd, on behalf of the owners.
Since 1632, the site has served as a hotel and a coaching house, but following the closure of the hotel around 2002, the buildings have been left in urgent need of care.
A design and access statement said: “The existing buildings have unfortunately been left unmaintained and unattended for approximately for 12 years.
“Many issues both internally and externally – mainly owing to failures of the drainage system and some vandalism – have led to issues of water ingress and spalling brickwork as well as general dilapidation and break ins.
“The proposed works allow for the sympathetic and careful restoration of these details.”
The existing structure of the buildings will be left untouched, but extensive repairs will be carried out in some areas due to the water damage.
Plans also include creating parking spaces at the back of the hotel.
The Odd Fellows hall, which was built in 1882, was used as a music venue.
