Thetford development blocked by Breckland Council due to fears of houses being ‘too cramped’

A developer has lost their bid to build new homes in the centre of Thetford.

Plans to construct three terraced houses on a small plot of land off Pike Street in Thetford have been blocked by Breckland Council due to concerns the houses would be “too cramped”.

This is despite the efforts of agent Carlyon Architecture Ltd to persuade officials that the new builds would make “best use” of the small space to avoid this issue.

According to the planning statement, the two-storey houses would have blended the old and modern style of terraced homes commonly found in the town by incorporating flint walls in the design.

Thetford Town Council objected to the plans – worrying it would be an over development of the area.

The authority also backed the Historic Buildings officer’s fears that the character of the properties would not be in keeping with the appearance of the area, which is part of a conservation zone.

Breckland Council was also not happy that there was enough evidence to show the development would mitigate its impact on the environment.
