Wales select former King's Ely School pupil Rebecca Daniel for Commonwealth Games in Birmingham
Former King's Ely School student Rebecca Daniel is gearing up to represent Wales in the hockey at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The 21-year-old, who hails from the village of Gazeley, has been selected for the Hockey Wales women’s team after impressing coaches at the recent Women’s Junior World Cup in South Africa.
Earlier this month Daniel made her senior Wales debut against South Africa and she helped the side to record a first victory over their opponents since 1920 courtesy of a 1-0 win.
“It was such a memorable day getting my first international cap for Wales," said Daniel.
"Playing at home in Cardiff in front of friends and family was amazing. It was a great experience playing against South Africa and even better to get a win in the first game of the series.
"Overall the matches were great preparation for the Commonwealth Games.”
Daniel is one of just 36 athletes chosen to represent Hockey Wales at the Games, which get under way today. Olympic bronze medallist Leah Wilkinson will captain the women’s side.
