Newmarket Hockey Club's first team record a single-goal victory over Cambridge University in the East Hockey League

Newmarket are fourth in the East Women’s League Division 2 North West standings following Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Cambridge University III.

They secured all three points at the University’s Sports Ground thanks to an early strike from Georgia Atherton, while at the other end some strong work from Faye Andreou helped to keep the students at bay.

The win has left Newmarket’s first team sitting three points adrift of third-placed St Ives ahead of Saturday’s home clash against Cambridge City IV (11am).

Meanwhile, in the East Women’s League Division 4 North West, Newmarket II won the battle of the division’s top two sides to reach the summit.

An early short corner strike from Jess Malings was cancelled out by rivals Haverhill, who headed into the contest as the league leaders.

However, Malings’ second goal of the encounter sealed a 2-1 win and was enough to see Newmarket leapfrog their opponents.

Despite only having 10 players available, Newmarket III collected a 1-1 draw from their East Women’s League Division 5 North West trip to St Ives IV.

The depleted visitors broke the deadlock when Vicky Benedikz and Robyn Kennedy combined for Zoe Bailey to tap in at the back post.

This gave Newmarket something to hold on to and while St Ives managed to draw level from a short corner just before the half-time whistle, Newmarket held out throughout the second half to claim a point.

l In the East Men’s League Division 2 North East, Newmarket suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of promotion-chasing Harleston Magpies III.

The hosting Magpies struck first before a Josh Dawson shot from near the penalty spot levelled the scoreline up for Newmarket.

However, a couple of late goals for Magpies saw them regain control of the encounter and rendered Will Wilson’s goal in the closing stages as a mere consolation.

The first team will seek to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they host Dereham II (2.30pm).

Elsewhere, Newmarket II further boosted their East Men’s League Division 4 North East promotion chances by recording a 4-0 win over Ipswich & East Suffolk III.

Goals from Alex Aitkin, Peter Terrett, Toby Gould and Andy Baker got the job done for fifth-placed Newmarket, who find themselves four points adrift of table-topping Watton.

Fresh from winning their last three games, Newmarket III rallied for a hard fought 2-2 draw in the East Men’s League Division 5 North East (South) at Thetford Town.

Hosting Thetford went into the break one goal to the good but after a formation switch at half-time Newmarket got themselves level shortly after the restart through Jack Baker, who applied the finishing touch after some good build-up play by Will Green.

Thetford went on to re-take the lead via a back-post tap in, yet the combination of Green and Baker came to Newmarket’s rescue for a share of the spoils.
