Fire at Muntons in Stowmarket sees about 120 tonnes of barley removed from silo
About 120 tonnes of barley were removed from a silo following a fire at a malt factory in Suffolk.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 9.50pm yesterday to the incident at Muntons in Stowmarket.
A spokesperson said there was a smoulder in the intake driers, affecting around 130 tonnes of barley.
They said the fire service responded quickly to the firm’s early warning system, with nine vehicles on site.
Four engines rotated in shift throughout the night to dampen all the barley affected.
“We are pleased to report that the smoulder was contained and has now been entirely eliminated,” the spokesperson said.
“Site is up and running as usual, so there is no risk of a chocolate, malt loaf or beer shortage.”
A fire service spokesman said about 120 tonnes of barley were removed from a 31 metre tall silo into HGVs.
The incident was dealt with by 4.38am, with crews remaining on scene to monitor.
