Suffolk coffee roasters and tea smiths Butterworth & Son from Bury St Edmunds have launched a new Gold range
Recently a friend suggested to me, over a coffee, with such great artwork Butterworth coffee has, why can’t we make our labels peelable so one might remove the sticker from its packaging and adhere it somewhere else. I asked some Butterworth coffee drinkers and they were all in agreement.
It seemed that the peelable stickers were something Butterworth/Thomas Howes art fans had been craving for some time.
For many years Butterworth & Son has worked with Bury firm Willowbridge Labels. Karl Seeley managed the business on the Rougham Industrial Estate prior to the business moving to its current location on Moreton Hall Industirial Estate, where he is now a director.
Years ago, Karl presented to me a new label format, a two-part label that could be manufactured and applied to a product or document where the top part can be removed as a separate label and placed onto another product or document for a number of different applications, some of which one can see in use on pharmaceutical products, whereby batch numbers can be removed from the carrier label and applied to other documents. This product is called a piggy-back label.
The cogs (fueled by caffeine) began whirring and I remembered the labels Karl once showed me.
For the most part, Tom’s artwork is now featured in a postcard style label featuring the areas near to the coffee farms for our blends, a theme related to the concept of the blend is utilised.
However, for our Gold coffees, we use a unique image that relates to the title rather than the area. These coffees are community lots rather than single estate and therefore the continuity of supply is easier managed. This was crucial to meet the minimum cost efficient print runs of 10,000.
Our Gold coffees are a selection of single origin (from one country) coffees that are priced to compete with high street stores, yet offer exceptional quality. Typically, high street stores offer specialty branded coffee for 32p per 10g, our Gold coffees start at 17p per 10g.
The designs and availability of the Gold coffees made the perfect choice.
I’ve never seen piggy-back labels used on coffee bags, anywhere. Could Butterworths be the first?
