New signage reveals Merkur Slots is taking over the former HSBC bank building in King Street, Thetford

Signage for a controversial plan to turn a Thetford former bank into an adult gaming centre (AGC) is showing a new name on the door to the one that was expected

The AGC for the former HSBC bank building in King Street was approved unanimously by Breckland Council’s planning committee in July last year despite more than 500 residents signed a petition in objection to the plans, after original applicants Chongie Entertainment Ltd put forward their plans in February.

It was initially meant to a ‘Little Vegas’ site, but now the signage shows it will actually be a new branch for Merkur Slots UK (Ltd).

A spokesperson for the Merkur Slots said the site, which has been disued since December 2020, is due to open in the next couple of weeks and should create between eight to 10 jobs.

The spokesperson added: “We are looking forward to returning a vacant unit back to commercial use, ensuring it once again contributes to the local economy. The venue will create new jobs and represents much-needed high street investment at a challenging time.

“Our Merkur Slots venues are where people come to enjoy a game of bingo or slots and we look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”
