Roads across Suffolk flooded or obstructed due to Storm Ciarán, including Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, near Woodbridge, Hadleigh and more





Storm Ciarán is wreaking havoc on the county’s roads today with numerous reports of flooding and other obstructions.

Suffolk Highways has warned of widespread travel disruption due to bad weather and is urging motorists to plan ahead.

A yellow weather warning has been put in place by the Met Office for wind – with heavy showers also lashing the county.

SuffolkNews has compiled a list of areas hit by Storm Ciarán – which will be updated throughout the day:

Flooding has been reported on the A134 at Sicklesmere, outside Bury St Edmunds, with conditions described as ‘barely passable’.

The A14 is closed westbound between junction 47 at Woolpit and junction 45 at Blackthorpe due to flooding.

Police are in attendance and a diversion is in place, according to National Highways.

There have also been reports of flooding on the A140 at Wetheringsett, with conditions described as ‘barely passable’.

The A1141 at Kersey, near Hadleigh, is ‘barely passable’ with traffic queuing.

The B1066 is impassable due to flooding between Glemsford and Boxtead.

There is heavy traffic on Wherstead Road in Ipswich due to a mix of flooding and the closure of the Orwell Bridge.

Station Road in Blaxhall is also impassable due to flooding.

Grove Road in Walsham-le-Willows is impassable due to flooding from Palmer Street to The Causeway.

Suffolk Highways said trees have fallen down in Mouse Lane in Rougham and Newbourne Road in Brightwell.

In addition, Brockford Street is facing heavy flooding.

The authority urged motorists to drive with caution.

An emergency road closure was in place along Mill Street in Mildenhall due to a fallen tree.

A Suffolk Highways spokesman told motorists to seek a different route to the town.

However, the route reopened shortly after 9am.

The B1119 is impassable both ways due to flooding at the Knodishall Green turn-off.

At 9.20am, Suffolk Highways reported flooding in Bullen Lane in Bramford, Church Road in Stowupland, Farmerie Road in Hundon, Finningham Road in Walsham-le-Willows, The Fenn, Hatcheston, Low Street in Framlingham and Bridge Street in Kelsale.

A spokesman for the authority urged people to avoid the areas if possible.

In addition, the authority is checking up on fallen trees on the B1456 at Shotley, Pond Hall Road and Layham Road in Hadleigh, Tuddenham Road, Orford Street and Playford Road in Ipswich, Halesworth Road in Southwold and Church Road in Ramsholt.

Lower Road in Rattlesden, near Needham Market, is currently flooded.

It was described by eyewitnesses as ‘impassable’.

Drinkstone Road in Woolpit is also flooded, although this is passable.

Heavy traffic has been reported at Barking Road, at the junction with the B1078 south of Needham Market.

This is also due to flooding.

Debenham Road in Crowfield is also waterlogged and is facing growing traffic.

Suffolk Highways has reported flooding in Coddenham Road in Needham Market, Stone Bridge Lane and Rendle Lane in Stowupland, Mary Lane in Hundon, Fairfield Road in Framlingham and Coram Street in Polstead.

As of 11.20am, the authority is also attending more waterlogged streets, including Saxham Street, in Stowupland, Low Road and Priory Lane in Debenham, Bury Road in Brockley, Tannington Road in Bedfield, Low Street in Badingham and Withersfield Road in Great Wratting.

At 12.20pm, Suffolk Highways reported further fallen trees in Mill Lane, Henley, Dunwich Road in Wesleton and Church Road in Kessingland.

It also reported flooding at Woodbridge Road in Tunstall, Church Street in Wetheringsett, Ickworth Road in Norton, Moat Lane in Rougham, Brook Lane in Framlingham and the Henstead Crossroads.

Suffolk Highways has confirmed emergency closures on the following roads: Deadmans Lane in Stoke Ash, Wickham Road in Thwaite, Lower Road in Somerton, Thurston Lane in Stansfield, The Butt in Debenham, Saxham Street in Stowupland, Fairfield Rd in Framlingham and St John’s Road in Ilketshall.
