Jack Taylor puts Ipswich Town ahead at Rotherham United late on but stoppage time goal from Christ Tiehi denies Kieran McKenna’s side victory

Ipswich Town saw victory snatched away in stoppage time as Rotherham United salvaged a 2-2 draw at the New York Stadium.

Jack Taylor thought he had earned the Blues all three points when his 89th minute goal put Town ahead, only for Christ Tiehi to strike for the Millers to deny Ipswich the chance to move within a point of Sky Bet Championship leaders Leicester City.

Sam Morsy’s first goal of the season had brought Ipswich on terms after a goal from Rotherham’s record signing Sam Nombe had put the hosts in front inside the opening four minutes.

The Suffolk side remain unbeaten in 11 league matches and extend their club record unbeaten away run to 17 matches.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna made three changes to the side that drew at Birmingham City on Saturday. Axel Tuanzebe made his league debut in place of Luke Woolfenden, who dropped to a league bench for the first time since February.

Kayden Jackson and Saturday’s two-goal hero Marcus Harness also came in, with Omari Hutchinson and top scorer Nathan Broadhead missing from the squad with a sickness bug.

Brandon Williams returned from his own illness and was back among the substitutes.

Only captain Morsy remained in the starting XI from the previous visit to Rotherham just 19 months ago.

Rotherham manager Matt Taylor also made two changes to his side, with Nombe replacing Jordan Hugill and captain Sean Morrison dropping out for Daniel Ayala.

Ayala, celebrating his 33rd birthday, was making his first start for the Millers since joining in October.

Town, donning their new white third kit for the first time, got off to the nightmare start as the Millers went in front with the first chance of the game. Nombe was too alert for Tuanzebe inside the six-yard box and was able to turn home Fred Onyedinma’s low cross on the slide.

Ipswich had not settled and could have found themselves two behind when Tiehi’s 25-yard flashed just over the bar after a corner was only half-cleared.

Town were level on 19 minutes, though, courtesy of their first effort in the game. Leif Davis added a seventh assist of the season, picking out Morsy from a free kick by the corner flag in acres of space on the edge of the box, who curled a sublime first-time effort into the top corner.

Remarkably, the Egypt international became Ipswich’s 17th different goalscorer in all competitions this season.

On 35 minutes, the Blues felt unfortunate not to get a penalty when former Miller George Hirst had his legs clipped by Hakeem Odoffin. The 2,000 away fans saw their appeals waved away by referee Graham Scott.

Town were appearing to find a free man whenever the ball entered the Rotherham box, and Harry Clarke would have wanted to do better with a header that bounced wide following a corner.

Odoffin’s miscued effort from distance meant neither goalkeeper was troubled in the remaining minutes of the first half, and the sides went in level at the break.

Jackson saw another Town penalty appeal dismissed early in the second half, the wideman visibly hurt after a challenge from Odoffin after the ball had been crossed.

After winning the ball back well inside the Rotherham half, Davis drove forward and lashed a strike over the bar from 25 yards out as the game ticked over the hour mark.

Conor Chaplin was next to clear the Millers’ crossbar after his initial pass for Hirst was intercepted on the edge of the area.

Rotherham’s aerial threat was clear and their best chance since the goal came courtesy of Nombe, who headed wide after Hugill headed into his path.

Chaplin had another two efforts either side of a triple substitution, having a low shot blocked and another fired over after a one-two with Davis.

The three changes saw Hutchinson, Taylor and Freddie Ladapo take over from Jackson, Massimo Luongo and Hirst for the final 20 minutes. Town’s number nine was booed by the Millers faithful as he entered the fray.

Sebastian Revan was the booked for a strong challenge on Hutchinson, the Chelsea loanee having beaten the Rotherham substitute to the ball following a brief lapse in concentration.

The travelling Blue Army were soon screaming for another penalty when Tuanzebe’s header struck Georgie Kelly, but again the referee was unmoved.

Ipswich continued to mount pressure as the game entered the final 10 minutes, Chaplin failing to connect well enough with a Hutchinson cross that looked dangerous.

Morsy was booked for a late foul on Ollie Rathbone before Dane Scarlett, who made his most promising cameo at Birmingham on Saturday, replaced Chaplin.

Vaclav Hladky produced a smart save following a moment of pinball in the Town penalty area. The ball dropped kindly to Kelly, who saw his low effort smothered by the Czech as the home crowd raised the volume.

But, just as Town were running out of ideas, they found a goal. Davis’ low ball was poked by Taylor and bounced off of Viktor Johansson and rolled into the net.

The former Peterborough United man will claim it for his first league goal in Ipswich colours.

Harness made way for Dominic Ball in Town’s final change as the sides moved into six added minutes.

The Blues could not hold out, though, as Rotherham levelled in stoppage time. Tiehi curled a perfectly-timed finish into the top corner from the edge of the box to bring the Millers back on terms.

Morsy’s late shot was saved low to Johansson’s right as the shares were spoiled in South Yorkshire.

Town hold an eight-point buffer over third-placed Leeds United ahead of Saturday’s return to Portman Road to take on Swansea City.
