Ipswich Town column: Joey Sadler reflects on win at Queens Park Rangers, this weekend’s clash with Leeds United and the potential arrival of Brandon Williams

The Tractor Boys are flying. Three wins out of three and heading into the weekend’s fixture with Leeds United full of confidence and ready to take another championship giant down.

Fresh off the back of a successful weekend at Loftus Road, where London called and we answered with three points, Town will be confident of gaining another victory on Saturday and hopeful they can take the Whites down at a sold-out Portman Road.

A victory against Leeds is always good and wouldn’t it be nice to get one over Daniel Farke, who is well overdue a defeat at the hands of Ipswich Town. I think we’ll get something out of the game, but despite their sticky start to the campaign, I don’t think we should underestimate what is still a quality Leeds side heading down to Suffolk. I’ll go with a 2-2 draw.

Just quickly on last weekend, where Town very much rode their luck and were fortunate to come away with maximum points, it was once again pleasing to see this usually pretty-on-the-eye Kieran McKenna side withstand any bullying and professionally ‘get the job done’. Gareth Ainsworth is always a tricky customer, but a customer it’s always nice to get one over!

It’s been the perfect start and I’ve been so impressed with some of our key performers thus far, especially Massimo Luongo.

When Mass signed on the dotted line in early January, we certainly wouldn’t have expected him to have the impact he has, but now – still here as a Championship player – he’s been ever present and looks like a class above, even in this division alongside skipper Samy Morsy.

If I’m being honest, I think Town’s midfield is as good as it gets in this division, with quality in that area scattered all over the club and we’re still yet to see the best of new recruit Jack Taylor, who looks a very handy addition too.

Our team, on paper, isn’t one filled with ‘big names’ and players many will be familiar with at this level. But the way we play and the way each player perfects their individual role to the highest of their ability is fantastic, all knitted and put together by our super manager.

There’s been a few rumblings of transfer news this week and it looks like Brandon Williams is soon to be a Tractor Boy. Somebody I would’ve never predicted would arrive at the club this summer, but again another addition coming in with real quality and Premier League and European pedigree to his name.

I’m more than happy with that signing and after a few slow weeks, it seems Mark Ashton has got the chequebook (and cooking oil) out again and we’re back on the hunt.

I think we’ll sign two to three more this window, with a few also leaving the club, which will be sad to see but part of the process now of us moving forward. Last year was fantastic in so many ways and it will be sad to see any of the players who played a part in that leave, but we need to look at it as progression and trust this management to keep us pushing forwards.

I wrote last week how a few quality additions would really push us forward this year, but was quickly reminded that the current squad of ours is more than capable and that it’s going to take a special player and character to break into this side.

So let’s sit back, ride the wave and continue to bask in success of this modern day, forward-thinking and ambitious Ipswich Town Football Club. See you Saturday.
