Ipswich Town Column: Joey Sadler on side’s flying form and how goalkeeper Václav Hladký is big part of it

Please don’t make us go two weeks without football again, especially when it’s as good as this.

After what seemed a lifetime, Town were finally back in action and took care of a Bristol City side with relative ease.

Friday night's disappointment was thankfully followed by victory on Wednesday and I hope any Town fan who made it to the New York Stadium before the cancellation, was also on hand to witness the 1-0 win at Ashton Gate.

With the less said the better about that debacle in Rotherham the better.

Another three points on the board, means the Tractor Boys are nine clear of third placed Leeds with a game in hand, which is just astonishing and although it was far from glamorous at times on Wednesday, this well-oiled winning machine Kieran McKenna has assembled continues to be victorious, churning out results in all different types of ways.

One man who has been influential in that is goalkeeper Václav Hladký, who looks to have kept his place despite the return of number one, Christian Walton.

I believe Vaz is now essential to the way we play and build up from the back. He seems to be improving week on week and his footwork and passing ability is as good as I’ve seen in this league. He’s been excellent.

But with Walton returning, what happens now? Does Vaz keep his place, or does the number one come back in? For me, there’s only one man who should be in the sticks right now and that is Hladký.

This is a goalkeeper in the form of his life and now an essential part of not only how we keep the ball out of our net, but also the build up to try and put it in the oppositions.

It’s crazy to have a goalkeeper such as Christian Walton sitting on the side-lines, but the shirt has to be Hladký’s and I’m not sure it would be the right thing to change that now.

An abundance of talent all over the park is now backed up by two top class goalkeepers, which can only be a good thing.

I’ve seen a lot of rival fans recently referring to Ipswich Town as ‘Momentum FC’ stating rather hopefully that ‘they’ll drop off soon’ and ‘they’re not that good’. Fair enough and I for one don’t mind this ‘momentum’ continuing for as long as possible.

But what I don’t think opposition fans realise is the actual level of players we have in the building and anybody in a team sitting second place and nine points ahead of third, must be half-decent.

Of course, we’ll keep doing our thing and who knows where that will take us, but good players under an exceptional manager, is only going to be a recipe for success.

Looking ahead to the weekend now and last season’s nemesis and League One winners Plymouth Argyle are the visitors to Portman Road.

The Pilgrims have enjoyed a decent start to life back in the Championship and I for one never had them being anywhere near any kind of trouble.

But it would be nice to get one over on a side who was probably the only one to have our number last campaign.

So bring it on, bring on Portman Road, and let’s keep riding this wave together. Up the Town.
