Ipswich Town column: Kieran McKenna’s men must cap off 2023 with win against QPR after Leicester City draw

After last weekend’s thumping by Leeds United, one or two Town fans went into Boxing Day’s fixture with Leicester City slightly anxious of how things would pan out, with the Foxes flying and, just like Leeds, containing serious firepower at their disposal.

Thankfully it was nothing like what we all witnessed at Elland Road and instead, the ‘old Ipswich’ were on show.

I thought we were decent personally and absolutely worthy of a point, if not more. After a sticky first half and going into the break a goal down, I was pleased with how well we reacted.

The second half was all ours, as we dominated and knocked on the door of a team who arguably have one foot in the Premier League.

So although we didn’t win, and I’m not one for usually celebrating draws, we will take the point and can be proud of our efforts in obtaining in it.

That said, it is still a draw and we now need to bounce back with a victory, in two winnable games coming up.

The first one being QPR who are a side Town have already beaten this campaign and who they will be favourites to beat again.

The Hoops have a new manager since the last time we faced them, but their league position and form has largely stayed the same. So with the current state of affairs of the two clubs, there shouldn’t be any excuses if we don’t beat them.

It has been such a wonderful year supporting Ipswich Town and certainly one of the best in mine or many other Town fans’ lifetime.

Therefore, it would be fitting for us to finish it off in style, with a vintage Kieran McKenna performance at Portman Road.

Town begin 2024 with a trip away to Stoke City on a Monday afternoon, which is something the football cliché gods will always make you aware is a tough game.

So, let’s get that victory on Friday and round off what has been a truly remarkable calendar year for Town.
