Mildenhall Town boss Phil Weavers believes more is to come despite perfect start to new Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division season

They may have won all nine of their opening Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division matches this term, but player-manager Phil Weavers believes that his Mildenhall Town side still have ‘gears to go through’.

Weavers’ charges maintained their perfect start to the 2023/24 campaign on Saturday by winning 2-0 at the previous season’s runners-up Thetford Town courtesy of goals from Olly Hughes and Jon Kaye.

It was a result that saw Mildenhall reach the Premier Division’s summit, opening up a two-point lead on second-placed Newmarket Town having played a couple of games less.

Weavers said: “It’s been a great start, but we know that nothing is ever won in October.

“We spoke about getting a good starting and maintaining it because last year we also started well but then fell away.

“The thing is, I still don’t think we’re setting the world alight and we’ve still got gears to go through.

“The lads have been exceptional in terms of their application, but performance wise we’ve got more to give.

“That might just be me as a character, always wanting more, but I believe there is more to come.

“At the same time we’re in a great place. I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in a side that’s rattled off nine straight wins, especially at the start of a season.”

Despite getting off to a flyer, it is when the first league defeat comes that Weavers believes will be a true test of his team’s credentials.

He added: “I’ve been involved in football long enough to know that every team has a bad spell and bad results and we’re not immune from that.

“It will come, but we can’t let it define our season. One loss isn’t got to hurt you, but if you end up going on a run, that’s when the problems start.

“We’ve got a good group this year and I’d back them to recover quickly, just like we have when we’ve lost in the cups this season.”

Mildenhall will hope to take their winning run into double figures on Saturday when they host third-from-bottom Kirkley & Pakefield (3pm) before making the short journey to Newmarket on Tuesday for a top-of-the-table encounter at the Tristel Stadium (7.45pm).
