Stowmarket apprentice secures dream role at UK Power Network Services

One of the UK’s top network operators has given a 30-year-old man a chance to develop skills through an apprenticeship scheme.

Chad Pizzey, from Stowmarket, is one of 14 new recruits to take part in the UK Power Network Services’ apprentice programme that teaches students vital skills in the industry.

The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and apprentices will spend the next two years studying alongside experts in Bury St Edmunds.

Chad said: “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to learn. I like to push myself and keep my brain active, in this role we will always be on the go.

“I was so happy to join a company that looks after its employees so well and puts their safety first - I felt ecstatic to get the job.

“I will be working in substations connecting switchgear and other equipment. Without that, power cannot be distributed along cables into everybody’s houses.

“I’d like to learn and progress as much as I can to become the best I can be at my role.”

RT Hon Justine Greening, chairwoman of the Purpose Coalition, said: "Apprenticeships are an integral part of how we plug the skills gap, enabling young people to earn while they learn and providing them with a positive pathway to a career.

“UK Power Networks are expanding their programme, opening up access to traditional and emerging careers which will be part of a new high tech, green economy.

“Its continuing work to develop and support young people will provide a pipeline of talent directly from the communities it serves and will also drive stronger social mobility - a key imperative for a successful Britain of the future.”
