Five Suffolk walks in Felixstowe, Aldeburgh, Bury St Edmunds and Eye to try this Boxing Day
We’ve put our heads together to come up with five refreshing Suffolk walks you can enjoy with the family this Boxing Day.
From blowing away the cobwebs on the coast at Aldeburgh and Felixstowe, to exploring the Ickworth Estate, we’ve got you covered.
So all you need now is your welly boots and possibly a flask of something warm.
West Stow
West Stow County Park, near Bury St Edmunds, is a beautiful spot for you and the family to visit over the Christmas holidays.
The park, which is also home to an Anglo Saxon Village, is open all year around, including from 9am – 5pm on Boxing Day.
Whilst visiting West Stow you can walk along the River Lark or around the lake, where you can spot ducks, geese, swans and plenty of other feathered friends.
And if they have any energy left after all that walking, children love the play park next to the car park which has something for all ages.
Parking costs £2 for up to two hours – for more than two hours it costs £3. Drivers can pay for their parking using the RinGo app.
Ickworth Estate
Stomping around the grounds of the National Trust’s Ickworth Estate is one of our top recommendations for getting some fresh air this Boxing Day.
Parkland at the estate in Horringer, near Bury St Edmunds, will be open between 9am – 5pm, and the gardens between 10am – 4.30pm.
If you have children with you they can have fun spotting wildlife in the woodland and the Albana Walk includes a den-building area and trim trail
Pricing information can be found on the National Trust website.
Dogs are welcome across most of the estate and there is plenty of parking available.
Thornham Walks
Between Stowmarket and Diss you will find 12 miles of paths to venture down, at Thornham Walks, near Eye.
Thornham Walks is definitely the hidden gem on this list, and a magical spot for children, and their adults, to spend Boxing Day.
With fairy doors and impressive wooden sculptures and a huge play area, it is the perfect place to let your imagination run wild.
Any want-to-be twitchers can spend some quiet time inside the Thornham Walks bird hide.
Parking costs £3.50 for all day on weekends and bank holidays and £2.50 on weekdays.
Aldeburgh
Heading to the Suffolk coast this Boxing Day? Then you may well need that flask of something warm.
Aldeburgh is certainly the place to head to if you are looking for a quiet walk along the unspoiled seafront.
There is something about sea air on a cold day that is truly refreshing, especially if you are lucky enough to get a glimpse of winter sun.
Whilst walking along the beach you may spot the special memorial tree that is often placed there.
Felixstowe
If you have little children looking to try out new bikes or scooters after Christmas, why not jump in the car and spend your Boxing Day at Felixstowe.
There are miles of the traditional seafront promenade to enjoy in the newer part of town.
But you can also take a quieter walk at old Felixstowe and admire all the colourful beach huts.
And at Landguard Fort, next to Felixstowe Docks, there is a whole nature reserve, just waiting for family adventures.
