Tuddenham St Mary, near Mildenhall, villager raises frustrations after being affected by repeated home flooding
A villager has raised his frustrations after being affected by repeated flooding.
Shaun Palmer, of Cavenham Road, in Tuddenham St Mary, near Mildenhall, lost mains power at his house on Thursday for the third time since November in the floods caused by Storm Henk.
Water seeps under Mr Palmer’s house, causing the electricity to slip and leaving him reliant on extension cords from the few plugs that remain working.
“It’s the third time since November this has happened,” he said.
“The water pools off into my property and gets under the lounge floor which trips the electric.
“All the mains things around have not worked, so I’ve got no boiler, hot water or heating.
“There are a few plugs that are still working so I’m using extensions for the fridge and freezer and so on.
“It takes about a day and a half to dry out. I’ve also got a submersible pump to send water to the drains.”
Mr Palmer said he had brought the issue up with the parish council at the last three meetings. At the latest meeting, on Thursday, the body had taken it seriously.
He has also complained to Suffolk County Council.
The flooding runs from nearby fields, where water pools when there is heavy rain, and seeps into Mr Palmer’s property.
In a statement, Tuddenham St Mary Parish Council said: “The parish council has been made aware of the flooding and in response have set up a working party.
“The working party will consider comments from residents and agree an action plan to recommend to full council involving external agencies as required.”
Storm Henk caused severe flooding across West Suffolk and beyond, with roads including Compiegne Way, in Bury St Edmunds, being closed for days as a result.
Nowton Road, also in Bury, was also shut.
Outside Bury, Coddenham Road, in Needham Market, and the A1088, near Elmswell, also saw significant levels of standing water.
Suffolk County Council was approached for comment.
