RAF Lakenheath servicewoman Mikayla Hayes found not guilty of causing death by careless driving in Southery
A US servicewoman accused of causing the death of a motorcyclist by careless driving following a crash in Norfolk last year has been found not guilty.
Airman first class Mikayla Hayes, 25, who worked at RAF Lakenheath, was driving home from work on August 26 when the collision happened on the A10, in Southery.
Hayes was at the junction with Lynn Road and attempting to turn right onto the A10 when her Honda Accord collided with a Yamaha motorcyclist.
The rider, 33-year-old Matthew Day, suffered serious injuries in the crash and died later in hospital.
Hayes was also taken to hospital for treatment where she was initially arrested for causing serious injury by careless driving.
She was later arrested for causing death by careless driving and taken to King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
Hayes, of Snowdrop Grove, in Downham Market, was charged with causing death by careless driving which she denied.
Today, following a seven-day trial at Norwich Crown Court, Hayes was acquitted.
Hayes said in evidence: “I still to this day have no idea why I didn’t see that motorcycle.”
Detective Inspector Dave McCormack, who led the investigation, said: “Nothing can compensate Matthew’s family for their loss. We presented the best case and respect the jury’s decision.”
