A spokesperson for the BTP said: “Officers were called to Chelmsford railway station at around 11.30am today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A number of trains have either been delayed or cancelled after the incident.

The 11.52am service out of Ipswich to LLS will terminate at Witham, meaning the Hatfield Peverel to London Liverpool Street leg of the journey will not occur.

The same services at 12.02pm and 1.02pm have been cancelled completely.

The train from LLS to Norwich at 12pm, which would stop at Ipswich at 1.07pm to arrive in Norwich for 1.46pm has also been cancelled.

The service at the same time in the opposite direction will terminate at Colchester.

A Greater Anglia spokesperson confirmed disruption is expected to continue into the afternoon as all lines that travel through the area are blocked.

They also stated that rail replacement buses are being organised.
