Linden Homes wins full planning approval for 112 more new homes off Norton Road, Thurston, near Bury St Edmunds

Proposals for more than 120 new homes in Thurston, near Bury St Edmunds, have been given the green light by planners.

On Friday, Mid Suffolk District Council granted approval for a hybrid application by Linden Homes on land to the north side of Norton Road, Thurston.

The developer applied for full permission to build 112 homes (including 43 affordable) with access, infrastructure, landscaping and amenity space and outline permission for nine self-build plots along the northern edge of the site.

The scheme is the third phase of the development which, in March 2018, was granted outline approval for up to 200 homes including nine self-build plots, a primary school site, access, infrastructure, landscaping and amenity space.

Phase one – 87 homes – and phase two – 53 homes – already have full planning permission and construction work is under way.

With the revised phase three plans including 121 homes, the site will now accommodate 61 more homes than the 200 previously granted outline approval.

Thurston Parish Council ‘strongly’ objected to the application, adding that the uplift in property numbers would ‘deliver a scheme that is overcrowded and fails to promote high-quality design’.

A number of public objections were also received, citing concerns over traffic, highway safety, deficiencies in social facilities and impact on the character of the area.

A design and access statement submitted to Mid Suffolk District Council said the latest plans would not be over-development of the site.

The proposed development also includes 217 allocated parking spaces, an additional 26 garage spaces and 15 visitor parking spaces.

The Linden site stands opposite another new homes development – by Hopkins Homes – which is under construction.
