Ipswich Borough Council to consider selling more land for development of Eastern Gateway industrial park in Sproughton Road, near A14





The next stage of development for an industrial estate on the outskirts of Ipswich could be on the horizon as a council considers selling off more land.

At its executive meeting next Tuesday, Ipswich Borough Council will request approval to sell a two-acre plot at the Eastern Gateway park in Sproughton Road.

Cllr Neil MacDonald, Ipswich Borough Council leader, said that, should the sale go through, it would leave 18.95 acres of unused land remaining at the site, which sits next to junction 54 of the A14.

That means 70 per cent of the park’s 130 acres would have been earmarked for development.

Current estimates suggest the sale would finish during the second half of this year, and could lead to the creation of up to 50 new jobs, an Ipswich Borough Council report into the sale said.

The sale would be subject to any developer gaining planning permission for the site.

It could then come into use during 2025.

Despite lying outside of the borough, IBC owns the land Eastern Gateway sits on.

Located on a brownfield site that once housed a British Sugar factory before it left in 2001, the authority bought the land in 2014.

Big names, such as Amazon and La Doria, are already housed at the site.

At the executive meeting, the council will consider two options.

The first would see the sale sale as detailed in its report, while the second would be to wait for a better offer.

Cllr MacDonald is chasing for the first option to be approved.

The council’s report added: “It will result in additional investment at the site and has the potential to generate additional employment opportunities for residents of the borough.”

The proposals have been recommended for approval to secure the ‘best value’ for development and to support the local economy.
