Ram raiders smash their way into Newmarket High Street Nationwide Building Society to steal cash machine
Ram raiders smashed their way into the Newmarket High Street branch of Nationwide in the early hours of this morning (December 4) stealing its ATM cash machine.
Police were called to the scene at 4.50am where criminals had used a JCB telehandler to smash their way into the property and remove the ATM.
The front of the historic Grade II listed building, once the home of Musks butchers, has been virtually destroyed by the raiders, who then loaded part of the cash machine into a Luton van which made off in convoy with a white Mercedes A Class towards Cambridgeshire. The digger was left behind.
Police have cordoned off the High Street site, outside which debris including the original Victorian tile work and a decorative pillar which had been a feature of the shop front for more than 100 years, is scattered across the pavement.
Police believe four individuals were involved in the incident, all dressed in dark clothing and wearing balaclavas. They are appealing for any witnesses to the ram raid as well as anyone driving in the Newmarket area between 4.30am and 5.15am this morning who may have dashcam footage.
