Risby Truckstop near Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich takeaway Massala given low hygiene ratings following recent inspections of Suffolk eateries by the Food Standards Agency
Takeaways in two Suffolk towns have received zero and a one star hygiene ratings, following the latest inspections carried out by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
The FSA works with local authorities to enforce food safety rules and award star-ratings to businesses, giving residents an indication of cleanliness and hygiene.
When choosing a restaurant or picking a takeaway, you probably want to know if you are in safe hands.
So here's a list of the Suffolk eateries handed a one or zero star rating, followings inspections carried out, in May 2023.

Ipswich
Inspected on May 3, the Massala Indian takeaway in Ipswich was given the lowest possible rating of zero.
Following the inspection of the takeaway in Bramford Road inspectors said urgent improvement was needed in the management of food safety.
Inspectors also said major improvements were needed to the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building.
Sudbury
The Mandarin Chinese takeaway in Cross Street, Sudbury, was given a rating of one, following its latest inspection on May 24.
Inspectors said major improvement was needed in the area of food safety.
They said improvement was also necessary when it came to hygienic food handling and cleanliness and condition of facilities and building.
Risby – near Bury St Edmunds
Inspected on May 18, the JS Risby Truckstop on Newmarket Road was given a food hygiene rating of one.
The owners of the truckstop were told that major improvements needed to be made when it came to food safety.
For cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, inspectors found the truckstop to be ‘generally satisfactory’.
Understanding the ratings
The hygienic food handling category includes the preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of foods.
Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building relates to the restaurant itself, including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, to enable good food hygiene.
The management of food safety category relates to systems or checks in place, including paperwork, to ensure food sold or served is safe to eat, as well as evidence that staff know about food safety.
