Sudbury family business Weston’s Bakery ceases trading after husband-and-wife owners injured on traffic collision
A popular family bakery business has ceased trading, after the owners sustained serious injuries in a traffic collision at the end of last week.
Pat and Chris Weston, the husband-and-wife co-founders of Weston’s Bakery in Sudbury, were hospitalised following a head-on crash with an overtaking vehicle on Friday.
Their daughter Liz stated that her parents were “extremely shaken” and “lucky to be alive”, confirming that mum Chris was discharged on the same day but “in a lot of pain”, while dad Pat was kept overnight, having suffered broken ribs and a possible broken wrist.
As a consequence, the family announced that they had decided with “very heavy hearts” to close their bakery in Gaol Lane, with last Saturday the final day of trading.
It comes just over a month after the business had to shut the doors on its secondary branch in King Street, also due to unforeseen circumstances.
Liz Weston said: “The universe seems to have been conspiring against us for the last few months and this was the final straw. As a family, we are no longer able to continue the fight to keep our doors open.
“Thank you to all of our customers, many of whom have become friends. We will miss seeing all of you and can’t say enough how much we have appreciated your support.
“To all of our wonderful staff who have worked so hard to help us grow the business and who have really stepped up in our time of need, we thank each and every one of you, past and present.
“We are so sorry to have let you down but we know with all the skills, care and work ethic you have shown us, especially in recent months, you will all go on to great things.
“From the bottom of our hearts we thank you and just wish we could have all continued together.
“As you can imagine, this has been very difficult for everyone involved and we are devastated to have had to make this decision. My parents now need time to heal and recover, so I ask that you give them privacy at this time.”
