We visited The Lakehouse Café in Onehouse, near Stowmarket, and tried the lunch menu

After hearing lots of good things about the Lakehouse Café, we headed to its picturesque, village location to warm up with a spot of lunch.
The Lakehouse Café can be found in Onehouse, near Stowmarket, just over the road from another popular venue, the Shepherd and Dog pub.
As I drove up to the café, with my husband Sam, for a much needed lunchtime date, it did feel a bit idyllic.
There was frost covering the fields, where horses stood wrapped up against the elements, and The Lakehouse looked like a log cabin you typically see in a Christmas movie.
We had arrived, late as usual, and the car park was packed with cars, on what was obviously a busy Saturday, December afternoon.
Luckily the friendly staff were understanding and found us a table indoors – there is also covered and heated, outdoor seating for busy spells.
I admired the classy interior of the café, which included plants and funky artwork, having only ever had a coffee outside (in Covid times) previously.
The little touches they had added for Christmas, got lots of positive comments from the younger customers. Who doesn't love an elf hanging upside down?
Staff were quick to take our order, completely overlooking the fancy coffees on the festive menu I went for a latte.
It turned out to be a very good choice, one of the best coffees I’d had in a while (and I’ve had a few).
Sam had a tea – something I am completely unqualified to review. It was a Tea Pigs everyday tea which ‘was nice’, apparently. I liked the cute little pot of milk that came with it.
Our food and drinks were quick to arrive. As we waited Sam questioned his meal choice spotting the group on the table next door tucking into some delicious looking toasties.
His actual choice was the sticky chicken burger, which came with fries alongside Asian style slaw and rocket.
Sam loved the flavours in his meal and was even complimentary about the chips; which for him is the equivalent of awarding a Michelin star.
We also shared some fries of the halloumi variety which were crunchy and delicious and were presented stylishly on top of tzatziki.
The halloumi fries at the bottom soaked up the dip, which is made from yoghurt and cucumber, which Sam wasn’t such a fan of – but I didn’t mind.
My lunch was an unconventional winter warmer: a Korean BBQ beef gyro – which is essentially a flatbread wrap loaded with beef, rocket, Kachumber and plenty of fiery flavours.
And for those, that like me didn’t know ‘what a Kachumber was’, my research has found it is actually an Indian salad, not a special type of cucumber – oops.
All of our food was piping hot, with the chilli and sauce in my gyro giving it a real kick, however, the flavours were warming rather than overwhelming.
Overall we really enjoyed our meal at the Lakehouse Café, in fact I think they are probably under-selling themselves as a café – maybe they should rebrand as a restaurant?
Gyros cost £13.99 and burgers are £14.95. The halloumi fries came from the tapas section of the menu and were £8.50, which seems reasonable as there were plenty to share.
With our hot drinks the bill came in at just under £44.
The Lakehouse seems to be a well-oiled machine with friendly staff that care about their customers – there was a really welcoming atmosphere with families, friends and couples seemingly very happy tucking into lunch at the lakeside spot.
Next time me and Sam will have to get our act together and try out their breakfast menu.
The Lakehouse Café at Onehouse is open from 9am – 3pm, Wednesday to Saturday, and from 9am to 2pm on a Sunday.
Breakfast is served until 11.30am. Lunch is served from 11.30am onwards.
