Kyle Edwards leaves Ipswich Town by mutual consent as he recovers from injury at loan club Oxford United

Ipswich Town have announced winger Kyle Edwards’ contract has been ‘mutually terminated’ ahead of it being due to expire in the summer.

The 25-year-old had joined Sky Bet League One club Oxford United on a season-long loan deal in the summer but saw the agreement end earlier this week amid injury frustration.

U’s boss Des Buckingham then revealed that the player who came through the ranks at West Bromwich Albion would stay with them for his rehabilitation from the hamstring issue until April, having only made six appearances, after settling in the area.

It prompted suggestions a permanent move to the Kassam Stadium could materialise with his contract having been set to expire in the summer.

And Town have now confirmed Edwards, who arrived on a free transfer from West Brom ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, is now a free agent after ending his contract by mutual consent.

The player capped by England at Under-16, U17 and U20 age groups, departs having made 63 appearances (23 starts) for the Suffolk club.

An Ipswich Town statement read: “The club and Kyle Edwards have agreed the mutual termination of his contract.

“Kyle joined Town in the summer of 2021, arriving on a free transfer having previously been with West Bromwich Albion.

“During his two full seasons at Portman Road, Kyle made 63 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals, and was an important part of the Town squad which won promotion from League One in 2022/23.

“The winger spent the first half of the current campaign on loan at Oxford United, making six appearances and scoring twice for the League One club during a spell disrupted by injury, before returning to Town earlier this week.

“He departs with the Club’s best wishes for the future.”

Edwards made 32 appearances, scoring three times, as Town won automatic promotion from League One last season.

Haddoch returns to Town

Meanwhile, young midfielder Ben Haddoch has returned to the Blues following a loan spell with Stowmarket Town but Seth O'Neill has extended his loan with the same club by a month.

It comes as Stowmarket also announced Colchester United pair Andrew Palmer Brown and Ewan Gordon Clement have both signed from Colchester United on one-month loans.
