In January, Suffolk News highlighted concerns over the ‘shocking’ state of Bury St Edmunds’ roads; with, at the time, more than 1,000 potholes across Suffolk awaiting repair.

Jane Gunsman, of Moreton Hall, notified Suffolk Highways about a 'giant pothole' - effectively two joined together - covering half the width of Skyliner Way.

She was first told the pothole did not warrant remedial action.

There are also other smaller potholes further along the road.

She said: “It’s shocking, I can’t understand how those roads have got in that state and they’ve done nothing about it. I’m not the only person to have reported those potholes.”

Suffolk Highways said at the time there had been a significant increase in the number of potholes due to the cold weather and those on Skyliner Way would be closely monitored and inspected on a monthly basis.

Mrs Gunsman, a community matters activator at Waitrose in Bury , said it was like playing dodgems trying to avoid the potholes, and was 'an accident waiting to happen'

As of January 12, there were 1,033 potholes in the county awaiting repair that meet intervention criteria.

A Suffolk Highways spokeswoman said that during cold and wet weather, freezing water on roads opens up cracks, bursting the asphalt.

The significant increase was mainly in the west of the county as inland areas were generally colder.

She said: “Suffolk Highways is working to repair potholes as quickly and efficiently as possible, whilst also investing in preventative road maintenance such as surface dressing and road resurfacing to help stop new potholes forming.

“We encourage the public to continue reporting any road defects via our Highways Reporting Tool.”
