A Suffolk village school surprised pupils and their families alike at its Christmas carol service with a live Nativity scene complete with donkeys and a real baby Jesus.
Barnham Primary School, near Thetford, welcomed everyone to the village’s St Gregory Church in Euston Road with Donkeys, Jack and Snowball, as well eight-month-old Ernest and pupils dressed up as Mary, Joseph, the star, the angel Gabriel, the three wise men and shepherds.
Amy Arnold, the school’s headteacher, said the addition of the donkeys had been kept a closely guarded secret, even from the children involved in the scene.
She added: “The idea came about as we wanted our pupils to be immersed in the Nativity story, as much as possible, and to create lasting memories of this magical and special time of year.
“Our children were absolutely amazed as they arrived at the church and there have since been several request from children and staff to have our own donkeys at school.
“We are very grateful to Mal from Rushford for bringing the donkeys and St Gregory's Church for their support in helping to make our idea happen.”
