Manchester United and Celtic great Brian McClair talks Sir Alex, Saudi Arabia and FA Cup songs on the Six of the Best Podcast

With 14 trophies in a near 11-year spell with Manchester United, including four Premier Leagues, two FA Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup as well as being a Scottish Cup and Premier Division winner with Celtic, Brian McClair is quite rightly adored by fans.

He and Andrew Cole will be coming to The Apex in Bury St Edmunds on September 5, for An Audience with Manchester United Legends night, and Six of the Best Podcaster Kevin Hurst caught up with him to talk about his thoughts on the likes of FA Cup songs, room and car sharing with his team mates and what he thinks of players going to the Saudi league.

What were your experiences of FA Cup Final songs and what do you think of them?

“Most football songs are pretty poor really, apart from one or two, but because of the passing of time they don’t become better but they are almost not as bad when you have a lot of different things to compare them against.

“I loved the New Order one and I quite liked The Lightning Seeds, apart from the sentiment of it.

“We ended up having a number one with Status Quo, which was a bonus, as I didn’t think it would be as successful as it was, but it went to number one and I have a gold disk, which I am very proud of.”

In an interview that Sir Alex Ferguson had recently, he said that you were one of three of his most underrated players he had during his management career – how do you feel about that and did you feel you were underrated as a player?

“No I don’t have any feelings on that. For me, the only person you needed to please was the coach, the manager or the person who picked the team – I just tried to please them.

“I have always wanted to be part of a team, so playing football was brilliant for me. So for Alex Ferguson picking me in several positions and asking me to play several different roles over all those years, I was delighted to do it.

“You need a supporting cast so the lead actor to do their best of what they do and I saw myself as that kind of thing - being a part of the team, in whatever role Alex Ferguson was asking me to do.”
