Kyle Edwards returns to Ipswich Town following injury-hit loan spell at Oxford United

Winger Kyle Edwards has returned to Ipswich Town after having his loan spell at Sky Bet League One Oxford United cut short amid injury frustration.

The 25-year-old had joined the U’s on a season-long agreement in the summer but has only made six appearances, including four starts, having been sidelined since November with a hamstring injury.

The player who came through the ranks at West Bromwich Albion, who is out of contract at Portman Road in the summer, would be free to join another club on loan this season but is still undergoing rehabilitation for the issue.

Edwards scored twice for Oxford in his spell at the Kassam Stadium, once in the Football League Trophy and once in a 3-0 league victory at Fleetwood.

The tricky winger made 32 appearances, scoring three goals, as Town won automatic promotion from League One last season.

Meanwhile, Tony Mowbray, who memorably helped the Suffolk club to promotion to the Premier League back in 2000, was confirmed as Wayne Rooney’s successor as Birmingham City manager earlier today.

The former Town captain and coach, who was sacked by fellow Championship club Sunderland just over a month ago, will once again have former Blues defender Mark Venus as his assistant.

Birmingham are due to visit Portman Road on Saturday, February 24.
